The xx are leading the race for the UK’s number one album, nudging just ahead of Bob Dylan.
The September crush. The opening weeks of Autumn traditionally bring a flurry of high profile releases, and this week’s chart race contains some undoubted big hitters.
According to the Official Chart Company, The xx are leading the way with new album ‘Coexist’. Critically praised, Clash awarded the album 8/10 with writer Gareth James noting: “The familiar sparse, shrugging guitar touches return, sounding no less beguiling than they did three years ago, but the craft has improved.”

Nudging its way to number one on the midweek countdown, ‘Coexist’ faces some high profile competition. The Script are at number two, while Bob Dylan trails just behind with new album ‘Tempest’.
A typically imposing return from the iconic American artist, ‘Tempest’ is another beguiling statement. Hitting number three on the midweek countdown, the all important weekend sales could yet see Bob Dylan steal away with pole position.
In all, the mid week Top 40 contains a total of 12 new entries. Pet Shop Boys are at number five, while X Factor contestant Joe McElderry is at number nine.
Further down the charts, you can find more Clash friendly fare such as Gallows (number 29) and that David Byrne x Annie Clark collaboration (number 32). Somewhat pleasingly, Calexico have made it into the Top 40, with new album ‘Algiers’ sitting at number 34.
