Legendary British rockers The Who could be set to perform at the half time show for next year’s Superbowl.
Only founded in the late 60s, the Superbowl has grown to become one of the most popular sporting events on the planet. Each year the great and good of American Football gather to win the ultimate prize, with some spectacular entertainment along the way.
This year New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen provided the entertainment. Blazing through a short set with The E Street Band it later emerged that the star had actually sang over a backing track, with the band miming.
Due in part to the logistics of wheeling out a group for a fifteen minute set, the insinuation that The Boss would mime nonetheless hurt many of his fans.
Broadcast to countless millions across the planet, the Superbowl half time show in one of the biggest entertainment events around. When a parade of Motown legends performed the audience figures actually increased for their show, with many switching off when the game re-started.
Next year it could be the turn of The Who to take to the stage. According to American magazine Sports Illustrated the legendary band – now reduced to two original members – will take the stage during the halftime show of the 2010 National Football League championship game, scheduled for February 7th in Miami.
The NFL has refused to confirm or deny the rumours. “When we have something to announce, we’ll announce it.”
In addition to this, singer Roger Daltrey recently told Billboard that the band were working on new material. “Hopefully if this tour has done it’s job, I’ll be in really good form as a vocalist,” said Daltrey. “And who knows, we might make our best work.”
