Californian psychedelic overlords The Warlocks are due to return with their new album ‘The Mirror Explodes’.
The Warlocks is a name draped in outsider rock history. The Grateful Dead used the name as a pseudonym in the early days, while an incarnation of The Velvet Underground also performed using the title.
A bunch of drop outs from the West Coast, The Warlocks are yet another group of exiles from The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Unlike their ‘Dig!’ brethren however, The Warlocks are capable of honing their psychedelic vision without losing a sense of other-wordly wonder.
The Warlocks last released an album with ‘Heavy Deavy Skull Lover’ in 2007. A critical success, it provided a massive boost to the band’s profile. Dark and brooding, it included songs such as ‘The Valley Of Death’ and finale ‘Death, I Hear You Walking’.
With droning guitars and half-whispered vocals, the album was the band’s most subdued to date. Follow up ‘The Mirror Explodes’ however, writhes and screams with feedback. The Warlocks slash and howl in the night, with the eight songs linking together like a close relation of ‘Sister Ray’.
Disorientating yet thrilling, ‘The Mirror Explodes’ is another enthralling chapter in the history of these rock outlaws. The Warlocks are are set to support the album with some UK tour dates, which have yet to be confirmed.
The Warlocks are due to release their new album ‘The Mirror Explodes’ on June 15th.
