The Spaceape has released free download EP 'Xorcism' – inspired by Haitian culture.
A reclusive, mysterious figure in British bass culture, The Spaceape has just made his next move. Placing a link online, the MC (real name Stephen Samuel Gordon) has pointed fans towards a new seven track free download containing some deeply personal material.
'Xorcism' contains seven short chapters, dealing with Gordon's experience of coping with a rare form of cancer, Neurolymphamatosis for the past three years. Partly inspiring The Spaceape's contributions to Kode9's 'Black Sun' album, those themes of bodily malfunction and radiation return again on the new EP.
Using samples from traditional Haitian culture, the effect is illusive yet direct. Rooted in a loose knit yet very distinct spiritual sensibility, what emerges is an extremely powerful of dealing with the constraints life throws against us.
