West Coast songwriter The Sea At Midnight returns with new single ‘Chopping Them Down’.
The LA-rooted project is the mask of singer-songwriter Vince Grant, an artist who roots his work in his surroundings, and the societal climate that permeates.
New single ‘Chopping Them Down’ couldn’t be more timely – an alt-rock plea, it stems from his enduring interest in eco-politics.
The lyrics display a concern at global warming, acting both as a reflection and as a warning. The impact can be felt all around us already – as a result, Vince will donate all Bandcamp proceeds from the single to victims of the recent Los Angeles fires.
Choppy guitar-led songwriting, his work has a real punch, held together by the raw intentionality that runs through The Sea At Midnight.
Commenting on the single, songwriter Vince Grant explains…
The science behind climate change is straightforward: carbon dioxide, primarily from burning fossil fuels, accumulates in the atmosphere, trapping heat that would otherwise escape into space. This leads to rising global temperatures and climate instability. Trees play a crucial role in mitigating this by absorbing carbon dioxide, converting it into oxygen, and storing carbon.
However, when forests are destroyed—whether through logging, land clearing, or wildfires—the stored carbon is released back into the atmosphere, exacerbating global warming. This means that deforestation eliminates a vital carbon sink and accelerates climate change by adding more carbon dioxide to the air. In a time when we are already witnessing devastating climate impacts, continuing to destroy forests and fuel this destructive cycle is nothing short of madness to me.
Tune in now.
