French sonic outlaws The Psychotic Monks return with new song 'Closure'.
The band's startling 2017 debut became a word of mouth sensation on its release, spawning some truly unhinged live shows.
New album 'Private Meaning First' – their first for new home Fat Cat Records – was laid down in a cramped French chateau, and there's a sense of spatial intensity at work.
A never-ending flow of ideas crammed into a tiny space, the record is led by new stormer 'Closure' and its accompanying short film.
Clara Marguerat steers the film, a stark and honest depiction of everyday life, filmed on the Paris Metro.
Sonically, counterpoints could lean from The Fall to Jesus Lizard via the first IDLES album, but truly The Psychotic Monks are working in their own lane.
Clara offers the following words on the film…
"It seemed important to us not to try to just illustrate the tracks, but to give dialogues between images and sound. As for the musical process, we wanted to show a certain vision of society, consequently of ourselves, while keeping a place for imagination and abstraction. We tried to get intimate, go through and evoke feelings of humiliation and guilt."
"Admit our need for lightness, despite the gravity of these emotions, and the tragic absurdity of the situations we witness. In the video for 'Closure', I wanted to direct the gaze on an ordinary life scene – a moment speaking for itself – and which questions how we look at each other, how we ignore each other."
"We made the choice together to use this video, rather than spotlighting the four of them, because it more accurately represented the intention of the song."
Tune in now.
