Daptone signings The Frightnrs have shared new track 'Dispute'.
1967 may well be remembered in the UK as The Summer Of Love, but in Jamaica it wrought an astonishing, record-breaking heatwave.
The temperatures rose to such an unrelenting extent that ska's electric pace was finally broken, with the tempos crashing downwards against American group soul.
Rocksteady was born. Now, four decades on, The Frightnrs have emerged to take rocksteady in fresh directions, a 21st century overhaul for a classic – and oft-neglected – sound.
Snapped up by Daptone, new album 'Nothing More To Say' drops on September 2nd, with The Frightnrs sharing the sombre, blues-ridden cut 'Dispute'.
The group explain: "With the content and the bare bones/empty mix of 'Dispute' it’s the darkest song of the record. It’s also the end, rightfully so. It is about what seems to be a never ending argument; a push and pull that inevitably does end. The type of loneliness you’re left with when the once obsessive romantic lover is now a mere stranger whose name you can’t remember."
Bass-led group soul with a Jamaican flourish, the production nods towards dub advancement while keeping the song in check. Superb rocksteady built for the 21st century, you can tune in below.
