Plus Christmas On Mars DVD nears release

Clash has been enjoying some quality telephone time with The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne.

Speaking from his Oklahoma home, the giant hamster ball-riding, ‘Do You Realize??’-writing, grey-of-hair weirdo-rock warrior told us about the relief he’s feeling now that the band’s long-awaited Christmas On Mars DVD, a work-in-progress since 2001, is actually coming out on November 10.

“It will be a great relief when it is finally out there in the world and I don’t have to worry about it anymore. I do all the packaging – it’s wonderful to not just do all your art the way you want, but to have all of these avenues by which you can do it. But it’s a big responsibility, all the marketing and the stuff that comes along with any sort of commercial release. You know, we do virtually every bit of it, so it’s a lot to do.”

And it won’t be too long before fans get to hear new recordings, too:

“I think we might have something out by June. We’ve been working on little bits of things, even while we’ve been here at home, so I think we can start doing things even at the beginning of March. Sometimes it takes us years to get things going, but we’ve already had a couple of years of fucking around and piecing songs together.”

And because you can’t speak to an American right now without mentioning the election:

“Let’s fucking hope [Barack] Obama wins this thing. I always worry because the Democrats in America just slack off so much. They don’t realise how diligent you have to be to win. So let’s hope it works out.”

American Democrat? Don’t slack! You can read more words of Wayne wisdom come the publication of issue 32 of Clash Magazine (December 2008). In the meantime, get more Flaming Lips content on ClashMusic.com by clicking HERE.
