The Dø make a certain type of music. Exacting, cold, precise – definitely not funky. So when the ClashMusic team heard that the partly French, partly Norwegian group had covered Janelle Monae eyebrows were raised.
Pulled from her ‘The ArchAndroid’ set, ‘Tightrope’ has become the American performer’s signature track. Funky in a James Brown sense, it is one of the more contagious cuts to emerge from the retro-soul boom.
Slowing the track down to a funereal pace, The Dø extract every ounce of funk from ‘Tightrope’. Supplying something oddly affecting, the duo stretch the song out for a searing, redemptive nine minute journey.
