The Cure To Re-Issue ‘Disintegration’

With two discs of extras and rarities

British goth rock legends The Cure are set to re-issue their 1989 album ‘Disintegration’.

Formed in the aftermath of the punk explosion, The Cure soon began to shy away from their dark, experimental roots. Lead singer Robert Smith has a sweet tooth, and a pop sensibility drove the band to American stardom.

Yet the band soon tired of success. Wanting to attempt something more experimental, Robert Smith began using hallucinogenic drugs in an effort to open himself up to new possibility.

Recorded across the summer of 1989, ‘Disintegration’ was a sprawling, experimental re-working of The Cure’s trademark sound. Yet somehow the album reached a wider audience than ever before, remaining the band’s best selling record to date.

Spawning singles such as ‘Fascination Street’ the album marks the band’s commercial and critical high point to date.

Now The Cure are to re-visit the album. ‘Disintegration’ is due to be re-issued in a lavish three CD format featuring previously-unreleased songs, demos and out takes. Allowing fans to explore the gestation of the material, the out-takes will lead up to a completely re-mastered version of the album.

The new version of ‘Disintegration’ is set to feature a full live version of the album, but it is not know if this will merely be a re-issue of 1991’s ‘Entreat’. Compiled by Robert Smith, the new version of the album will come complete with a 20 page booklet detailing the recording process.

The Cure are to release ‘Disintegration’ on May 24th.
