The Cribs have spoken about their recent bout of cross dressing for the single ‘Housewife’.
Cross dressing doesn’t really have much of a history in pop music. The Rolling Stones dragged up for the cover of ‘Some Girls’ while Queen of course applied some lipstick for ‘I Want To Break Free’.
Now The Cribs have joined that short roll call. The Jarman brothers dressed up as women for the unusual yet eye catching cover to recent single ‘Housewife’, an experience they apparently enjoyed.
Speaking to the NME, the Jarman brothers explained that they felt it was no big deal to dress in women’s clothing. Ryan Jarman explained that he felt more derision towards bands who would refuse to do it.
“I know a lot of bands who wouldn’t dream of dressing in girls’ clothes,” he said. “And to those guys I would say, ‘You suck’.”
The shoot began as a literal interpretation of the title, and ended up in one of The Cribs’ most distinctive cover shots. Continuing, Gary Jarman claimed that the duo had a “good time” in their new guise.
“It’s quite a literal interpretation of the title. There’s really no reason not to. We don’t have hang-ups about that kind of thing” he said.
“And it’s funny that it is still a big deal to some people. Who cares? It’s fun. We had a good time.”
The Cribs played Reading and Leeds over the weekend, bursting through tracks from across their back catalogue. However the band warned fans that the shows would be their last for some time.
In a new interview guitarist Johnny Marr explained that the band have begun to work on new material. The Cribs are set to enter the studio late this year to begin work on their new album, the follow up to ‘Ignore The Ignorant’.
