Indie dons The Cribs have reacted furiously after support group The Slits were pelted with objects during a show in Doncaster.
The Cribs current UK tour caps a remarkable year for the band. Managing to half-inch their hero Johnny Marr into their number the Wakefield band released their hugely successful new album ‘Ignore The Ignorant’.
Receiving across the board plaudits The Cribs stormed into the Top Ten. Fans thrilled to the new material, with Johnny Marr’s glistening guitar adding a lush demeanour to the new material.
Finishing the year with a lengthy tour, the band invited reformed post punk group The Slits to play a one off show with them. The Slits were one of the punk era’s most remarkable groups, with their all girl line up breaking new ground.
Debut album ‘Cut’ remains a classic, a stunning blend of punk rock and dub reggae. Reforming earlier this year, The Slits performance at the Doncaster Dome on Saturday (December 5th) was met with fury by some fans.
Pelted with objects The Slits battled on to perform a rare set. Speaking afterwards The Cribs were disgusted with the actions of a small minority of fans. “We were in two minds about what to do during their set,” the band told NME.
“Do we pull the show? No, that would be letting them win and making the night all about their behaviour. So we played.”
The Cribs added that they were “disgusted by the way that a certain minority treated The Slits during their set. The night was marred… by a handful of people throwing coins, beer and generally putting on a disgustingly chauvinistic display of small-mindedness”.
The band then recalled a show when they supported The Sex Pistols, only to be pelted with coins. “The thing that bothered us most is that this reception can’t possibly have been anything to do with the music,” they said. “Also, just to make it clear, these people didn’t bother or upset The Slits in any way. They played on, and the show of unity from the rest of the bands on the bill, as well as the way The Slits carried themselves, was not only a moral victory but also pretty moving.”
Finishing, The Cribs said: “We have met our fans all over the world and know that our fans are some of the best you could hope for”.
“We’re not stupid enough to tar everyone with the same brush because of a few bad apples. We’re just disappointed that Yorkshire was represented so poorly to so many people.”
