The Beths Share Indie Pop Smasher ‘Knees Deep’

"I wish I was the kind of person who was brave and decisive instead of cautious and scared."

New Zealand indie pop outfit The Beths have shared their new single ‘Knees Deep’.

The band’s incoming album ‘Expert In A Dying Field’ will be released next month, available from September 16th via Carpark Records. It’s the New Zealand act’s first since 2020, with the majority of it being recorded at guitarist Jonathan Pearce’s studio in Tāmaki Makaurau, Aotearoa (Auckland, New Zealand) late last year.

New single ‘Knees Deep’ is a heads-down indie pop ripper, with the chugging rhythm reminiscent of those endless Neu! jams re-framed for a slinky piece of guitar-flecked melody. As ever, the lyrics are wry and deeply humorous, with ‘Knees Deep’ referencing singer Liz Stokes’ hobby of swimming.

Discussing the song, she comments:

“I’m the kind of person who wants to go swimming, but takes like ten minutes to get all the way into the cold water, slowly and painfully. I hate this about myself, and am kind of envious of people who can just jump straight in the deep end. In a shocking twist, this is also a metaphor?! For how I wish I was the kind of person who was brave and decisive instead of cautious and scared.”
