Australian production team The Avalanches have blasted Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon.
It may be the run up to Christmas but out there in pop land, songwriters aren’t feeling quite so festive. Nominated for a plethora of Grammy awards, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon is on hot water after comments made earlier this year to the New York Times were dug out of the cupboard.
“I don’t think the Bon Iver record is the kind of record that would get nominated for a Grammy — I would get up there and be like, ‘This is for my parents, because they supported me,’ because I know they would think it would be stupid of me not to go up there” he said.
“But I kinda felt like going up there and being like: ‘Everyone should go home, this is ridiculous. You should not be doing this. We should not be gathering in a big room and looking at each other and pretending this is important’.”
Continuing, Justin Vernon blasted the artists who get involved in the ceremony. “98 percent of the people in that room, their art is compromised by the fact that they’re thinking that.”
Reading this, Australian cut ‘n’ paste team The Avalanches opened up their Twitter account. Sending Justin Vernon a very public message, the duo said: “a musicians ‘art is compromised’ if he/she desires a grammy .but endor$ing a product with proven devastating health risks is ok?”
The Australian crew are referring to Bon Iver’s involvement with a high profile ad campaign on behalf of Iver Bushmills. Sending a reply, Vernon asked the pair if they drank whiskey – a remark which only seemed to fuel the flames.
“actually vodka is more my thing, but this aint no rock n roll pissing contest. i have seen alcohol destroy many families … including my own.. and you are making money off this shit . dont try and justify it.”
