The 1975’s ‘People’ Is A Visceral Hymn

"Wake up wake up wake up..."

Well, this is unexpected.

The 1975 are many things – arch, ultra-modernist, ironic, seethingly pop – but rarely so explicitly, so unashamedly rock as this.

New single 'People' is out now, the latest titbit from their incoming album – the second in a 12 month spell – 'Notes On A Conditional Form'.

Somewhere between Queens Of The Stone Age and their previous pop bedlam, it's a preening, caustic ode to the Mess We Are In.

"Wake up, wake up, wake up / It's Monday morning and we've only got a thousand of them left," Matty opens, before surging head-long into controversy: "Well, my generation wanna fuck Barack Obama / Living in a sauna with legal marijuana…"

The 1975 play Reading festival tonight – August 23rd – and this will no doubt be their rider: "Well, girls, food, gear / I don't like going outside, so bring me everything here…"

Tune in now.
