Welsh mushroom munching psych-pop stars Super Furry Animals have spoken about their hometown of Cardiff.
Wales – the land of song. Yet for the nation’s deep roots in folk heritage the Welsh music scene can seem surprisingly pedestrian. All, that is, except for the mind blowing psych-pop of Super Furry Animals.
Formed in Cardiff, drummer Dafydd Leuan revealed that the group were drawn together by the city’s nightlife. “That’s how we became friends,” says Daf, “from going to nightclubs and parties out in the sticks.”
Settling in the Welsh capital because the city “seemed like a good place to start a band” Super Furry Animals are still going strong more than a decade later.
According to the drummer, Super Furry Animals initially had fellow Welsh artist Rhys Ifans on vocals. “Rhys was with the group at that point,” Leuan revealed.
“We were living in a shitty little flat in Cardiff and that’s where we came up with the name Super Furry Animals. We were doing a hell of a lot of acid at the time.”
Ifans still works with Dafydd Leuan in his side project The Peth, with the drummer revealing that he is always working on new material. I used to have a four-track in my spare room and a very primitive sequencer,” he explained. “We used to get pissed and put sounds through the mixing desk and fuck them up.”
“It’s either good music or bad music – it doesn’t matter what genre it is as long as it turns you on.”
