A British institution, Glasgow’s Sub Club celebrates its twenty-first anniversary this year. Born on the first of April 1987, the underground venue has hosted the finest underground talent since, and spent the last year inviting them back for celebratory bashes. Twelve months of solid partying has resulted in a new double CD, ‘Sub Club: 20 Years Underground’, mixed by their foremost ambassadors, Harri and Domenic from Subculture and JD Twitch and JG Wilkes from Optimo.
Subculture is a Sub Club stalwart, running since 1994 as, according to Harri, “an avenue to play out the best new music we hear that week whilst putting on a fucking good party.” Optimo, meanwhile, has been one of Britain’s coolest Sunday nights for a decade, an influential northern outpost for the electro-indie crossover vibe. Franz Ferdinand, LCD Soundsystem and Hot Chip have all conquered Optimo.
The double CD features the best cuts from both nights, and gives a flavour of the venerable venue. As regular punter Irvine Welsh recently remarked of his favourite club: “In an era where city centre and inner city clubs in Scotland and beyond are dropping like flies as developers move in, it’s brilliant to know that this venue has been going for twenty years. Here’s to the next twenty!”
The Sub Club 20th Anniversary CD is released on Soma on 19th May.
