Seminal New Yorkers The Strokes have begun work on their new album and according to singer Julian Casablancas they have completed three new songs.
Good grief, time flies. With ‘Is This It?’ a ripe eight years old perhaps it is time to give The Strokes their due. Without them almost a decade’s worth of music would be unthinkable, and millions of pairs of Converse trainers would be languishing in the depot.
However the band have been inactive since 2006. Since the release of ‘First Impressions Of Earth’ the musicians have split off from each other to work on a number of solo projects. Albert Hammond Jr has released a solo album, while Nikolai Fraiture has been working on his Nickel Eye project.
Singer Julian Casablancas has restricted himself to one track, albeit one that includes Santigold and Pharrell Williams. In an interview with Rolling Stone the singer discussed the new material, saying it has “a ’70s vibe, like Thin Lizzy or Elvis Costello.”
“But then some of it is bizarre music from the future that we’re trying to tone down to sound catchy,” he added. “So we’re trapped between the future and the ’70s.”
However Strokes’ manager Ryan Gentles claimed a new album was unlikely to be released this year. “No recording studio time has been booked yet, as they sketch out the blueprints of new songs and fine-tune plans in their rehearsal space, but it will undoubtedly be all mapped out and etched in stone at some point in the not-too-distant future,” he said in a fan mailout.”
“I wish I could tell you that this definitely meant we can expect an album release date before the end of 2009, but it’s just too soon to speculate on that for sure yet.”
“One way or another…suffice to say, the work has begun!”
