Brighton based producer Gross Magic is streaming his new EP ‘Teen Jamz’ online now.
Perched on the south coast, Brighton continues to fling out utterly unique acts. Real name Sam McCarrigle, Gross Magic is a fast emerging producer who has clearly decided to some of the weirdest music ever made lies in the hands of pop greats.
Fusing his DNA with the output of ‘Off The Wall’ era Michael Jackson, Prince and more Gross Magic has a real pop touch. However allied to this is a need to subvert expectations, recalling the furious imagination of ‘Loser’ era Beck.
The pop beats are matched by some visceral riffs, with the overall effect like switching daytime MTV and ‘120 Minutes’ back in 1991. Nirvana style guitars make an appearance, while Ariel Pink’s dirty, lo-fi approach is also a useful reference point.
Debut EP ‘Teen Jamz’ was announced back in Spring, with a handful of mp3s sparking some surprising levels of hype. Up and coming label The Sounds Of Sweet Nothing are to handle the release, which will be pressed onto purple vinyl.
Available on twelve inch, ‘Teen Jamz’ follows a series of live shows which have seen McCarrigle expand Gross Magic into a full band set up.
