Traditional music in the United States tends to swing between two poles: slick, pop-centric country or overly earnest revivalists.
Representing a different, rather more challenging tradition, Steve Gunn and The Black Twig Pickers are kindred spirits. A noted guitarist, Gunn has frequently spoke of his admiration for the group, who conduct strange experiments on Appalachian music.
Well, they’re now collaborating. New album ‘Seasonal Hire’ is forthcoming through Thrill Jockey, with the material being recorded entirely live, without any overdubs.
Splitting sessions between Joseph Dejarnette's Studio 808a in rural Topeco, Virgina and the famed Black Dirt Studios this looks – on paper, at least – to be fascinating.
‘Seasonal Hire’ will be released on February 23rd.
