Speech Debelle is set to release her second album ‘Freedom Of Speech’ in February.
Mixing jazzy samples with witty, contagious raps Speech Debelle’s debut album ‘Speech Therapy’ seemed to charm everyone who heard it. A shock nomination at the Mercury Music Prize, the rapper stunned the music industry by waltzing away with the trophy.
However that’s when the trouble started. Acclaim failed to translate into sales, straining relations with her record label. Speech Debelle opted to go it alone, but soon found that life without label support was going to be extremely difficult.
Thankfully, the rapper is now back on Big Dada with work progressing on her second album. The long awaited follow up to her acclaimed LP, ‘Freedom Of Speech’ is set to drop in February.
Sessions were helmed by fast rising producer Kwes, who was able to react to the rapper’s eclectic tastes. The first taste of the album came this summer, when Speech Debelle leaked the cut ‘Blaze Up A Fire’ as the London riots raged.
Now the rapper is giving away the track ‘Studio Backpack Rap’. Describing the track Speech Debelle says ‘Studio Backpack Rap’ is “all about virtual instrumentation and an ode to Kwes the producer. For the writing stage of the album he would take out his laptop and midi-USB keyboard and that would be it. We’?d start working and I couldn’?t believe what we could do with so little equipment.?”
