The past few years have presented streaming platform SoundCloud with a number of difficulties.
Issues over licensing caused numerous labels to pull their music from the platform, sparking lengthy negotiations.
SoundCloud signed a deal with Warner Chappell last month, and now the audio brand has inked a similar arrangement with Merlin, an agency that represents digital rights for more than 20,000 independent labels.
It's a major step forward, with artists now able to collect monies raised from their music receiving plays on the platform.
SoundCloud founder Alexander Ljung issued a statement to the New York Times: "Independent creators have always been at the core of SoundCloud, and with this partnership we’re thrilled to extend new revenue-generating opportunities to thousands of independent labels."
