Indie dons Sonic Youth have signed a new contract with Matador Records, after their contractual obligations to the Universal Music Group ran out.
The US legends are currently finishing their 16th album of studio material, which will be released by Matador in all territories except for Japan.
The band emerged from the New York ‘no wave’ scene in the early 80s, and their three decade career has taken them from playing to nearly empty rooms to major label success. Sonic Youth have in the past recorded with such legendary independent labels as Blast First and SST, and can now add Matador to that illustrious list.
Sonic Youth signed with Geffen in 1990, and famously recommended the label sign the little known Seattle band Nirvana. The band’s last album was “Rather Ripped” in 2006, which will also be the last they produce which will be released by Geffen.
Matador will be the perfect home for the band, who had numerous label’s chasing their signature. The band have been busy in the two year lay off since “Rather Ripped”, producing a multi-media exhibit of their individual artworks called “Sonic Youth Etc.: Sensational Fix” as well as self-releasing an album of experimental material named “Andre Side Af Sonic Youth”.
There is no release date for new material from the band, though a new Sonic Youth album is said to be forthcoming.
