Sonic Youth, Lou Reed Join Occupy Campaign

Occupy Musicians tool expands

Sonic Youth and Lou Reed are just two of the acts who have signed up for the Occupy Musicians campaign.

The central bases may have been dispersed but the Occupy campaign refuses to go away. Claiming to represent ‘the 99%’ the movement have been a visible presence across the globe during the second half of 2011.

Gathering enormous attention, the Occupy movement has enjoyed the support of numerous musicians. Kanye West visited the New York site, while Rufus Wainwright, Jeff Mangum and more travelled to Wall Street to perform for the protesters.

Now Occupy have launched a new central resource for musicians interested in aiding the cause. Occupy Musicians is an online tool to bring these talented individuals together, with the site expanding rapidly.

A mission statement on Occupy Musicians reads as follows:

“We, the undersigned musicians and all who will join us, support Occupy Wall Street and the Occupy Movement around the world.”

Some seminal musicians have joined the campaign. Sonic Youth have shown their support, and the legendary alt rock group sit alongside the likes of Fugazi’s Ian MacKaye and Guy Picciotto, Talib Kweli and Lou Reed.

The full list is continually expanding, with musicians set to be joined by sound engineers, producers and other creative types.

The site aims to provide:

• to facilitate performances at Occupy spaces and events
• provide links to media wishing to interview Occupy-supporting musicians
• host testimony and other writings of musicians for why they both are and support the 99 percent
• host embedded media to Occupy-related songs and music videos
• network musicians to Occupy locations and Occupy fund raisers
