Canadian bluesman Son Of Dave has released a video featuring a bizarre yet brilliant cover of Daft Punk’s ‘Harder Better Faster Stronger’.
Born Benjamin Darvill, Son Of Dave is a Canadian musician who aims to bring delta blues music firmly into the 21st century. Darvill began life in novelty alt rockers Crash Test Dummies, before emigrating to London and reaching for his National Steel guitar.
Releasing albums on his own stead, Son Of Dave reached cult status with 2006’s ’02’. A blend of traditional blues styles with techno beats and even a slice of contemporary R&B, it bowled over critics.
Follow up album ’03’ was released last year, containing some of the musician’s best work to date. On the subsequent tour Darvill’s one man act stunned fans, with Son Of Dave emerging as a future minded version of Seasick Steve.
But you can’t keep a good bluesman down and little more than a year later Son Of Dave is set to return with a new UK tour and a new single. ‘Ain’t Going To Nike Town’ is taken from last year’s ’03’ album and will be accompanied by a superbly crafted and animated video from producer Alex Amelines.
A favourite with fans, award winning ‘High Fidelity’ author Nick Hornby named the song as one of his favourites from 2008.
To coincide with the release, Son Of Dave has released footage of a harmonica chokin’ foot stompin’ Daft Punk cover. ‘Harder Better Faster Stronger’? It is now.
