Smiths Re-Union Rumors

Group Linked To Coachella Performance

Legendary 80s indie group The Smiths are reportedly closer than ever to reforming, according to reports in the British press.

The band formed in 1982 around the creative nucleus of songwriters Morrissey and Johnny Marr. The most celebrated band of their generation, The Smiths released several classic albums before disintegrating in 1987.

Since then, the band have been involved in two major legal disputes as rhythm section Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce attempted to gain royalties owed to them. Never one to be slighted, singer Morrissey took the disputes personally and has criticized the pair in the press.

However, according to British tabloid The Sun a re-union appears to be close. A source told the newspaper: “It has looked impossible in the past but suddenly it all looks like it could happen.

“The buzz around the people who used to work for the band is they could play Coachella for a ludicrous amount of money. It’s closer than it ever has been. The split was a messy affair, but time’s a healer.”

The Smiths have already turned down several offers to reform. Since their split, Morrissey has embarked on a twenty year solo career, while Johnny Marr has worked on a number of side projects – he is currently a member of Modest Mouse and The Cribs.

Morrissey and Marr have already collaborated on a new Smiths retrospective ‘The Sound Of The Smiths’ due out in January.
