Funk legend Sly Stone is apparently penniless and living out of a white van in California.
As the leader of Sly & The Family Stone, Sly Stone dominated American music. His pan-racial collective partied down the barricades, supplying some good vibes at a time when the United States was tearing itself apart.
Scoring hit single after hit single, Sly & The Family Stone supplied one of the standout performances from the Woodstock festival. Later enduring personal problems, the group ultimately ran aground due to Sly Stone’s drug problems.
Spending decades in the wilderness, Sly Stone recently emerged from the shadows. Promising to complete a new album, a re-worked line up of Sly & The Family Stone performed at Lovebox last summer.
Now, though, it seems that Sly Stone has fallen on hard times. The funk icon has been discovered living out of a van in California, relying on the aid of a retired couple housed on the same street.
The New York Post discovered the songwriter, who claims to be satisfied with his existence. “I like my small camper,” he said. “I just do not want to return to a fixed home. I cannot stand being in one place. I must keep moving.”
Continuing, the songwriter claimed that he wanted to re-enter the music industry. “My music is a format that will encourage you to have a song you won’t forget. That’s why I got so much money, that there are so many people around, and that’s why I am in court. Millions of dollars!” Stone said.
“But now please tell everybody, please, to give me a job, play my music. I’m tired of all this shit, man.”
