Slumdog Storms Oscars

MIA flick bags eight gongs

British film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ has stormed the Oscars, with its M.I.A. sponsored soundtrack bagging two trophies.

A cult success on both sides of the Atlantic, the film’s use of M.I.A.’s track ‘Paper Planes’ saw the song rocket up the Billboard Top 100. Eventually breaking into the upper echelons of the chart, the song was one of last year’s biggest hits in America.

M.I.A. had hoped to perform at the ceremony last night (February 22nd) but was not able to attend due giving birth just a few days ago. Composer AR Rahman had told press previously that M.I.A. had suggested performing via hologram if that was what it took.

A heavily pregnant M.I.A. recently performed at the Grammy awards, where ‘Paper Planes’ was nominated for ‘Record Of The Year’.

The winners in the music categories were presented by Alicia Keys and teen star Zac Efron. The film’s acclaimed score was given ‘Best Song’ for ‘Jai Ho’ as well as overall ‘Best Score’.

It was a fantastic night for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ which won eight of the ten categories it was nominated in. Amongst the top prizes were the prestigious ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Director’ awarded to Danny Boyle.

How long until someone mentions that success like this would come easier if the British film industry were properly funded by the government? Looks like we just did.
