Slash Slates Velvet Revolver

"Toughest five years" of guitarist's life

Iconic guitarist Slash has spoken out over the rows that engulfed his group Velvet Revolver, admitting that the band are “sort of at a standstill”.

More than twenty years after the release of Guns N Roses debut album ‘Appetite For Destruction’, guitarist Slash remains an icon. The musician blended latin rhythms with metal pyrotechnics to produce something that has resonated throughout rock music.

Of course, it all went sour between Slash and singer Axl Rose. Slash exited the band in controversial circumstances in 1993, with the frontman clearly holding a grudge against his former collaborator.

In recent interviews Axl Rose was asked his position on working with Slash again, with the singer replying that Slash was “a cancer”. Pretty definitive.

Not that Slash minds, with the guitarist going on to form Velvet Revolver with a bunch of other escapees from Guns N Roses. However the band ran into difficulties with singer Scott Weiland leaving Velvet Revolver over a year ago.

In a new interview Slash reveals that the band are now at a “standstill”.

“I always support whatever group I’m playing with – I’ll never say anything bad about them while I’m in it. But f***in’ Velvet Revolver – that was the toughest five years, dealing with that band, just because of the obvious (singer Scott Weiland’s tumultuous exit) and really, really bad management. Joke management for the entire time.”

“For some reason in that entire five years I could never be happy. I could never get comfortable and happy with it because it was such a f***ing mess.”

Slash also revealed that he held no grievances against Scott Weiland. “Scott to me is now like George Bush” he told Classic Rock. “Y’know, I like him now that he’s not here. I have nothing bad to say about Scott, but he doesn’t work well with others in a group situation.”

Continuing, the guitarist said that Velvet Revolver are “sort of at a standstill. I haven’t heard any amazing submissions from singers as of late . . . Velvet when it finds the right guy will be amazing, but I’m in no rush.”

Slash is currently working on a solo album which is due for release later in the year. Containing guest appearances from Ozzy Osbourne, Flea and Chris Cornell the album has been in the works for some time.
