Silicone Soul Talk Glasgow

As Scottish city rises again

Dance duo Silicone Soul have spoken about the continuing success of Glasgow’s electronic music scene.

Acid House began as a primarily English affair, born in a handful of clubs and spread by a close-knit circle of DJs. However when the scene was nationwide it was adopted in cities across the UK.

In Glasgow, dance music seemed to take hold of an entire generation. Two decades on, the city’s electronic scene is as fertile as ever, providing inspiration to everyone from Calvin Harris to Hudson Mohawke.

Labels such as Soma provide the bedrock for the scene, releasing new music from challenging producers. Silicone Soul are long term signings, and are preparing to release some typically diverse new material.

Speaking to Social Eye, the duo explained their roots in Glasgow’s club scene. “For us it means a great deal to be signed with Soma, we first were exposed to the music by Slam at the Arches, the first records we bought were Soma releases so it’s really encouraging that they support us. I think when you are working with a label that has such a great, long running reputation it can only help when it comes to getting your music across to people.”

“We actually started out releasing 2 records on our own ‘Depth Perception’ label in the late 90s, Slam were playing the tracks at their gigs and that was kind of the first step to us signing with them.”

Continuing, Silicone Soul paid tribute to The Sub Club, one of Glasgow’s most celebrated dance venues. “For me the strength of Glasgow’s electronic scene can really be traced back to the guys that kicked it off – Slam / Soma and Harri and the gang at the Sub Club, they’ve guaranteed that you can hear the best in electronic music in the city ever since.”

Meanwhile, ClashMusic’s very own Glaswegian beat crew Gallus are preparing to launch their assault on London’s club scene. Named after a Scottish slang word for a confident young individual, Gallus is set to launch tonight.

Joining the Gallus crew are Shit Robot, We Love, Acid Washed and more. Launching tonight (September 24th) in CAMP you can hear a celebratory We Love DJ mix HERE.
