Icelandic group Sigur Ros have begun recording their new album, with sessions apparently going well.
Sigur Ros are destined to be forever linked with the word ‘glacial’ in the minds of lazy journos. However the band are so much more than this, with their gently evolving layers of sound one of the most emotionally gripping experiences in rock.
Live, the band are simply incredible with lead singer Jonsi Bergisson’s voice sailing high into the upper registers.
The band released their last album ‘Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust’ in 2008. Sigur Ros like to keep busy it seems, following that album with an innovative concert film and a performance with Bjork at the Nattura event.
Since then Sigur Ros seemed content to look backwards, with their record label Fat Cat re-issuing the band’s long lost debut album. Lead singer Jonsi Bergisson remained active, recording an album with his side-project Riceboy Sleeps.
Formed with his long term partner, Riceboy Sleeps blends music with art. The pair have performed together for some time, but this represents the first occasion that the group have released any recorded material.
The musician is currently preparing to record a fully fledged solo album, his first under his own name. Bergisson has a busy schedule, but it seems he is prepared to return to the fold in order to work on new material by Sigur Ros.
In a message on the group’s official website states that “the recordings have been going very well and that the album is taking form as a slower and more ambient record than með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust and takk.”
Drummer Orri Páll DýRason described the music as “melodic but much less noisy and more ‘out there’ than previous albums.”
Elsewhere, the Sigur Ros website reports that keyboard player “kjartan is set to write the original score to ondine, a new film by neil jordan. in addition to kjartan’s score, a few songs by sigur rós will appear in the film.”
Previously, the band had claimed to be busy recording with Coldplay singer Chris Martin. Sadly, this turned out to be a hilarious April Fool’s joke on their part.
Sigur Ros are expected to release their new album in 2010.
