Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook is due to re-issue the debut album by his new group Man Raze.
The Sex Pistols formed in the mid 70s, with the London music scene as stagnant as it had been for decades. Prog rock was in its pomp, and hot new groups such as Dr Feelgood were stuck in the city’s pubs.
Combining savage Stooges-inspired riffs, Johnny Rotten’s cold gaze and Vivienne Westwood’s revolutionary clothes The Sex Pistols were an adrenaline shot for the nation’s youth. Almost overnight punk rock became the new sensation and kids everywhere were busy attempting to cut up their t-shirts into new designs.
However the band stumbled to halt just a few short years later, with The Sex Pistols collapsing onstage at San Francisco’s Winterland venue in 1978. Singer Johnny Rotten would return to his birth name, leading Public Image Limited to critical acclaim.
Yet little was heard of the band’s rhythm section, who drove their early material to such majestic heights. Paul Cook and Steve Jones were the pulsing heart of punk, the men who provided the early impetus for what became The Sex Pistols.
Now reformed, the punk giants have vowed to never record new material pushing the musicians into side projects. John Lydon recently dis-agreed with Kele Okereke’s suggestion that he should reform PiL, while Steve Jones has signed up to teach beginners the tricks of the trade at ‘Rock & Roll Experience Camp’ in California.
Drummer Paul Cook, meanwhile, has been busy working with his new group Man Raze who are set to release an expanded version of their first album.
Formed with De Leppard guitarist Phil Collen the group’s debut album ‘Surreal’ was released last year. A trio, the rock group are completed by the addition of Simon Laffy on bass, who also helped produced the debut album by Man Raze.
The album will contain five previously unreleased tracks, ‘You’re So Wrong’, ’Low’ (Live in Burbank 08) , ‘Turn It Up’ (Deep Dub) , ‘Runnin’ Me Up’ (Instrumental Dub) and ‘Can’t Find My Own Way’- Live Acoustic (Gary Crowley show – UK) .
Man Raze are due to re-release their debut album ‘Surreal’ on June 9th.
