Punk legends Sex Pistols are set to play the Hammersmith Apollo for the first time ever, it has been announced.
The band are set to play the historic venue for the first time, with singer Johnny Rotten’s name being removed from the blacklist after being banned almost three decades ago.
The show will take place on September 2nd, after a whirlwind world tour that includes numerous festival appearances including this weekend’s Isle of Wight. Asked about the gig, the typically acerbic John Lydon had the following to say:
“Johnny Rotten is more than happy to come back to perform his sensational ‘Baghdad Was A Blast’. Please Fulham supporters don’t take offence, I remember you when you were socialists.”
Ahem. Hammersmith Apollo is, according to legend, the place where Pistols’ guitarist Steve Jones half-inched the band’s gear from the final performance of David Bowie’s creation Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. It is rumoured that the guitarist stole most of Bowie’s guitars and amps from this historic gig, and then set about getting a band together.
The Sex Pistols are also set to release a new live DVD, featuring footage from last year’s gig at Brixton Academy and many bonus extras. Titled “There’ll Always Be An England” the DVD is set to be released on June 30th.
Sex Pistols will play the following date:
September 2nd – London, Hammersmith Apollo
