Tennis great Serena Williams has set the internet alight with her Green Day mosh pit moment.
The punk heroes are busy completing a world tour, one that pivots between two seminal moments in their catalogue – 1994’s ‘Dookie’ and politicised 2004 statement ‘American Idiot’. CLASH caught Green Day on the London leg, and emerged transformed:
Two and a half hours after they started the show, the stadium still remains packed with fans until the very last second. With 90% of the audience sporting a ‘Dookie’ or ‘American Idiot’ t-shirt, it’s obvious how much these albums have resonated with us all.

As it happens, Serena Williams is also a huge Green Day fan. Attending the band’s show at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, she couldn’t resist getting in on the action – and the results went viral.
Fan footage of a joyous sporting great thoroughly in her element became one of social media’s purest moments over the weekend.

As it happens, Serena Williams is a long-time Green Day stan. In a TikTok post she name-checked her favourite songs from the band – evergreen hit ‘American Idiot’ is No. 1, but she’s got room for the melancholic concert closer ‘Time Of Your Life’, early stomper ‘When I Come Around’, and ’21 Guns’.

Earlier this year, Green Day invited Serena Williams to introduce them onstage at music industry icon Clive Davis’ exclusive pre-Grammy gala – she was thrilled, calling them “literally [my] favourite band of all time… Truly, to know me is to know my love for them.”
“When @billiejoearmstrong calls you to present their band, you jump on a plane and do it,” the sporting heroine wrote on Instagram.
