SEED Ensemble’s Cassie Kinoshi Explores The Key Role Of Women In Jazz

One of the key aspects of the current wave of energy within UK jazz is the sheer variety of the musicians involved.

People from all backgrounds are able to learn from another, their shared experiences fusing to open up new avenues of exploration.

Female identifying musicians are at the forefront of this. Groups such as Nerija and Maisha are dominated by this newgen talent, with composers such as Nubya Garcia reaching international acclaim.

SEED Ensemble notched up a Mercury nomination for their outstanding full length project 'Driftglass', a bold record featuring the talents of trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey, tenor saxophonist Chelsea Carmichael and stellar guitarist Shirley Tetteh, amongst others.

The group were chaired by Cassie Kinoshi, a stellar instrumentalist who continually sits at the forefront of groundbreaking composition.

London venue the Jazz Cafe recently filmed a full interview with Cassie, exploring her experiences in UK jazz and the key role that women have in its creative growth.
