London collective Seafarers have released their new album, ‘Another State’, via Bethnal Records.
The musical brainchild of Scottish saxophonist and songwriter Matthew Herd, ‘Another State’ follows debut album ‘Orlando’ and coming-of-age collection ‘II’. Herd who has origins in jazz (Jacob Collier, Liam Noble, Misha Mullov-Abbado) and beyond (Simon Armitage, The Howl & The Hum, DJ Yoda, Glass Animals), comes into his own as a bandleader on a truth-telling project that pivots between ember-burning folk and chamber pop.
‘Another State’ is accentuated by buoyant rhythms and mediative storytelling, but it’s the interplay between a revolving line-up of six established musicians that proves its biggest strength. Lauren Kinsella takes on the mantle as the vocal co-lead; Arun Thavasothy co-commands the bass, acoustic and electric guitar; Tom McCredie, of parallel project Tel Trio, is also on bass and guitar; pianist Tom Taylor brings forth the oceanic flourishes, whilst Dave Hamblett’s percussion grounds the album.
