Sally Shapiro have shared a cover of Pet Shop Boys classic single ‘Rent’.
The group – Sally Shapiro and Johan Agebjörn – are both huge fans of the iconic synth pop duo, and carries traces of those vintage 45s in their DNA. Melding those pop aspects with something a little darker, Sally Shapiro have helped transform the synth pop template for the 21st century.
This new cover finds the group coming full circle – Johan of Sally Shapiro was actually part of a Pet Shop Boys fan club as a child, and even got a personal request published in the official fan book in 1993. Top trivia!
This cover of ‘Rent’, then, comes from a highly personal place. Out now, it’s faithful to the original while casting it in Sally Shapiro’s light – or, more aptly, shade. Icy and ominous, this new rendering of ‘Rent’ feels right for the paranoia of the post-COVID era.
Co-mixed by Johnny Jewel, the track is out now digitally, while a 12 inch vinyl edition lands on October 6th.
