Whitechapel group S.C.U.M. have spoken to ClashMusic about the possibility of new material.
The world is moving quicker than ever. Musical trends come and go in the blink of an eye, with bands struggling to keep up. S.C.U.M. released their debut album ‘Again Into Eyes’ less than 12 months ago, but the Whitechapel band are already hard at work on new material.
Chatting to ClashMusic writer Marianne Gallagher, frontman Tom Cohen explained that the band are approaching new sessions hesitantly. “We’ve definitely taken a lot from everything we’ve done before; we’ve got a body of work to build on now. Do I want to achieve anything? I want to make it sound a lot more influences of 70’s soundtrack music, people like Gene Clark and Scott Walker. And yeah, I really want to work with this one producer. His name is Jean Claude Vannier. But I don’t know when that’s going to happen.”
Recently completing a run of live dates, S.C.U.M. have become known for their intense stage persona. Often wrapped in a veil of dry ice, the band’s dark, imposing live shows enhance the drama of ‘Again Into Eyes’.
Reflecting on their live achievements, Tom Cohen pondered the band’s most intense live show to date. “The most intense show we’ve ever done – I don’t know if it’s a good or a bad thing – was probably in Shoreditch Church. It was so long ago. We’re kind of like a different band now.”
Continuing, the frontman mused on the need to retain some kind of mystique. “I think that yeah, you need to have a little bit of mystique. But then, I think people like Rihanna have a bit of mystique. I mean, I don’t know what Rihanna talks like. All great figures in music are all a bit like that.”
New single ‘Faith Unfolds’ is out now. Check out the Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard directed video below…
