Rumours are circulating that seminal hip hop group Run-DMC could be set to reform.
Run-DMC remain one of the most vital touchstones in any hip hop education. Simply put: go and grab ‘Raising Hell’ and you’ll learn more about rap in 40 minutes than just about any other album.
Tragically, DJ and producer Jam Master Jay was shot dead in 2002 leading to the group being put on permanent hiatus. Now rumours are circulating in the United States that Run-DMC could be set to reform later this year.
AllHipHop broke the news, citing sources who claim that Run and DMC have privately confirmed the reunion. “Run-DMC is definitely back together” the source said, “and it’s a great day for hip-hop”.
In the immediate aftermath of Jay’s murder, the group seemed unequivocal about their retirement. “We can’t perform anymore” Run stated. “Nobody wants to see Run-DMC without Jay. Run-DMC is officially retired. I cannot get out in front of my fans with a new DJ. Some rock bands can replace the drummer and I don’t know any other way but to be the three original members. That’s all I can say. We are retired.”
The news remains unconfirmed. Here’s ‘It’s Tricky’.
