Horn toting indie mavericks The Rumble Strips have revealed that their forthcoming single was inspired by a mugging gone wrong.
The Rumble Strips are one of the most unusual groups in the UK. Lead singer Charlie Waller was previously in nu-wop types Vincent Vincent & The Villains before leaving to front his own band, prompting the revenge song ‘Johnny Two Bands’ from the Villains.
Signing to Transgressive Records, early singles such as ‘Motorcycle’ caused a buzz around the band. The Rumble Strips boasted outlandish songwriting and, in Charlie Waller, a singer who actually liked to sing.
Debut album ‘Girls And Weather’ was acclaimed by critics but failed to set the charts alight, despite the semi-hit single ‘Girls And Boys In Love’. A mixture of bittersweet lyrics and blazing soul influenced music, the album was followed by some sensational UK tour dates.
After a short break the band are ready to return with their second album ‘Welcome To The Walk Alone’. Produced by Mark Ronson in New York, the group were assisted by Owen Pallet who provided string arrangements.
Better known under his pseudonym Final Fantasy, Pallett has previously worked with the likes of Last Shadow Puppets and Arcade Fire.
So far little has been heard of the album beyond free download single ‘London’. ClashMusic caught up with the band recently, and were treated to an exclusive preview of a number of songs.

New single ‘Not The Only Person’ was apparently inspired by a group of would-be muggers. Charlier Waller and his wife were confronted by thieves, only for Mrs Waller to chase the stunned attackers down the street.
In Waller’s hands the song opens with an apology of sorts to the robbers – “You’re not the only person to get it wrong, it’s alright – come back tomorrow night and you can take anything you want.”
The Rumble Strips are set to release their new single ‘Not The Only Person’ on June 29th. The band have confirmed the following release show party for their new album:
