Ruger Steps Up To Cover Gyptian’s ‘Wine Slow’

As part of Apple Music London Sessions...

Ruger has stepped in to cover Gyptian’s classic ‘Wine Slow’.

The Nigerian star is having an incredible year, with his debut project ‘RU The World’ making serious headlines. Returning to London for a quickfire stopover, Ruger was invited to record a very special set for the Apple Music London Sessions.

Breezing through slick renditions of his stone cold hits ‘Asiwaju’ and ‘Ashana’, he also threw in something unexpected.

Gyptian’s 2013 single ‘Wine Slow’ is a modern classic, and clearly a key touchstone for the Lagos star. Indeed, it’s worth noting the shared DNA between dancehall and afrobeats generally – it’s there in the production, the snappy beats.

A nod from one icon to another, Ruger gives it his all on this deft cover. He says:

“I found the song and I just fell in love with it. I use it for anything, even when I’m chilling. If I want to sleep, I could just listen to it. When we’re recording it, during the Apple Music London Session, they were saying I had to do four takes, five takes. I said, “I could do 100 takes of the song as long as I’m enjoying myself,” because that song is amazing.”’

Tune in now.
