Detroit songwriter Rodriguez has died.

The news was confirmed across his website and social media pages a few moments ago; no cause of death was given. He was 81 years old. In a simple note, the message reads:

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our Legend, Rodriguez.

Sixto Rodriguez was born in Detroit to Mexican immigrant parents, coming of age in a working class family. A profoundly deep soul, his songwriting was informed by the folk boom, before taking on psychedelic hues.

While initially unsuccessful, his two studio albums ‘Cold Fact’ and ‘Coming From Reality’ won a cult audience, particularly in South Africa. Lauded by underground communities during the Apartheid era, his work came to inspire some pivotal figures in progressive South African politics.

Yet the music maker remained broadly unaware of this. Disappearing from music, he committed himself to his family, and the community around him – at one time, attempting to run for Mayor.

In the 90s, committed fans in South Africa tracked him down, and revealed the scale of his impact. Returning to the stage, Sixto Rodriguez’ story was captured in the multi award-winning documentary Searching For Sugar Man.

Pieced together by the late Swedish film maker Malik Bendjelloul, the film transformed Rodriguez’ life, sparking a much-deserved second career.

He is survived his three children, Eva, Sandra, and Regan.
