Legendary illustrator Ray Lowry has passed away, after battling an illness for a number of years, it has been announced.
Ray Lowry died at his home in Waterfoot, Lancashire yesterday (October 14th) at the age of 64. After leaving school Lowry joined an advertising agency, where he learned his craft. Spending many hours slaving away over advertising copy, Lowry’s imagination was granted free reign in the underground press such as Oz or International Times.
Lowry worked extensively, contributing illustrations to many magazines and newspapers such as The Guardian, Private Eye and Punch. However, it is for his association with The Clash that he is best remembered – Lowry joined the band on tour in 1979, and designed the iconic cover for ‘London Calling’.
Lowry’s drawings perfectly capture the raw energy of The Clash, and were used to illustrate Clash roadie Johnny Green’s book ‘A Riot Of Our Own: Night And Day With The Clash’
An exhibition of Ray Lowry’s work is currently running at the See Gallery, Rawenstall, Lancashhire exhibiting some of his best work. It will run until November 7th.
