Radiohead have revealed the statistics behind the success of their pay-what-you-like album ‘In Rainbows’, released on October 10th last year.
British group Radiohead have chosen to release the figures behind the release of last year’s album ‘In Rainbows’. The statistics show that despite the fact most fans chose to pay nothing to download the album, it still generated more money by the end of 2008 than the total sales of the group’s previous album ‘Hail To The Thief’.
Head of business affairs at Warner Chappell, Jane Dyball, was tasked with overseeing the release of ‘In Rainbows’. Dyball refused to reveal the average price, but did say she was responsible for pulling the release should it slip below a certain amount.
The download facility was taken down after the physical release of ‘In Rainbows’ became a huge success, reaching number one in both British and American charts.
Warner Chappell concluded that the new release style was a financial success, but did not reveal whether Radiohead plan to release an album in a similar way in the future.
Jane Dyball is set to deliver a talk on ‘In Rainbows’ at this year’s Iceland Airwaves music conference.
