Members of Radiohead could be set to contribute to the soundtrack of Ed Norton’s forthcoming film.
Radiohead are no strangers to soundtrack work. The band’s celebrated back catalogue attaches itself easily to film, with directors queuing up at Thom Yorke’s door to use ‘High And Dry’ over an emotional end sequence.
But the band rarely get their hands dirty themselves. However in a new interview director Ed Norton has revealed that members of Radiohead could be set to lend a number of ambient recordings to his forthcoming film.
Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood have contributed to the project, with Norton left to consider their input. Close friends, the Radiohead musicians seem to have developed the pieces some time ago.
Speaking to Variety, Ed Norton explained how the collaboration came about. “I’m friends with the guys in Radiohead, and Johnny Greenwood met me in London a while back,” said Norton.
“So given the spiritual ties in this film, I started talking to him about this idea: ‘What would you use to record this divine-like tuning sound?’ And he and Thom (Yorke) had been playing a lot of weird ambient stuff at the time and so, amazingly, they just unloaded tons and tons of files to us of these sound experiments that they had been doing.”
Continuing, Ed Norton explained that composer John O’Brien has been called into arrange the recordings. “We just listened to them in awe until (director) John (Curran) eventually got (composer) John O’Brien to come in and see what he could make of it.”
Meanwhile, Jonny Greenwood is working on some avant garde classical compositions. The guitarist is working on a new series of concerts, which will include some new material influenced by electronica.
The new material will premiere in a concert on October 6th at the Southbank Centre.
