Radio 1 have shaken up their schedule with some experienced presenters being replaced by new talent.
Not without its detractors, Radio 1 remains a vital force to new music. Home to a diverse array of presenters, the station has confirmed news of another shake up with plenty of young talent due to hop on board.
First: the departures. Gilles Peterson is set to wrap up his Worldwide show after a total of 13 years on the BBC. Dedicated to new music from around the world, the illustrious DJ has helped to introduce countless young artists.
Apparently in talks with 6Music, Gilles Peterson appeared philosophical about the move. “I’ve had an amazing 13 years at Radio 1 – to be able to get away with the radical music that I’ve pushed out has always surprised me and I thank Radio 1 for giving me the freedom to do that. I’m looking forward to continuing my work in the BBC family some time in the future”.
Elsewhere, Judge Jules will depart after 14 years of service while Kissy Sell Out will make way for new presenters. Drum ‘n’ bass team Fabio & Grooverider will also depart the station, with Friction* effectively taking their place on the schedule.
Part of a new wave of dance talent introduced to the schedules, Radio 1 have also set aside time for Skream & Benga. The dubstep pioneers will take control of the nation’s airwaves every Friday night between 11pm – 1am.
“This is a massive honour and we’re going to make the show really special” said Benga. “I’m so excited to get started and everyone is going to have a lovely time on Fridays!”
Toddla T gains a permanent slot, while Radio 1 has also decided to add the new weekly show BBC Radio 1 Residency. Finally, In New DJ’s We Trust will return with four brand new DJs due to be unveiled early next year.
Ben Cooper, Controller of Radio 1 said: ‘‘It’s important that Radio 1 continues to develop new talent and the station keeps evolving for our young listeners. These changes to our evening schedule will strengthen the range and depth of the specialist music offering on the network.’’
The new Radio 1 schedule comes into effect on April 2nd.
