R.E.M. has topped a new poll to find out which songs make men cry the most.
Music can inspire a huge range of emotions. From laughter to tears, music can move us in ways few other popular art forms can. Now a new poll has found out which songs make men cry the most.
Yep, men. The one half of the human race not normally associated with showing their emotions, it seems that the males among us just cannot keep their tears inside when certain songs come on the radio,
PRS For Music have conducted the new study, which shows that R.E.M.’s classic single ‘Everybody Hurts’ can move men the most. Taken from their album ‘Automatic For The People’ the track was accompanied by a famous video.
A staple of the band’s live set its redemptive message – ‘Just hold on’ – appears to make men well up. Coming out top, R.E.M. beat off some strong competition including some classic songwriting.
Eric Clapton also charted highly, with his track ‘Tears In Heaven’. Prompted by the death of his son, the song was a form of therapy for the guitarist who was left completely devastated by the incident.
Other entries include U2’s classic anthem ‘With Or Without You’ and ‘The Drugs Don’t Work’ by The Verve. Elsewhere in the Top Ten, Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Streets Of Philadelphia’ won a place after soundtracking the classic Hollywood film.
“A well-written tear-jerker is one that people can relate to and empathize with,” Ellis Rich, PRS for Music’s chairman said. “It is this lyrical connection that can reach deep down emotionally and move even the strongest of men.”
The Top Ten songs are:
1. ‘Everybody Hurts’ (REM)
2. ‘Tears in Heaven’ (Eric Clapton)
3. ‘Hallelujah’ (Leonard Cohen)
4. ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ (Sinead O’Connor)
