London three-piece Protection Spells seem to thrive on sparsity, excel with minimalism.
Debut EP ‘Daughter Of Gold’ was a haunting piece of dream pop, reminiscent of everyone from Daughter to Galaxie 500 and beyond.
New song 'Bleed Through Sheets' revolves around that coy guitar riff, the reverb-laden effects adding a sonic shimmer.
The title refers to the loss of female virginity, and how this can be viewed by society. Austin says:
“I have a preoccupation with virginity, especially concerning bleeding. It’s an odd kind of fetishized trauma, dreaded while also being sought after and desired. In this song I was thinking about how girls will actually fake bleed on their wedding night to try and confirm virginity. Mary bleeding suggests an interaction more human than holy and as such has to be covered up, literally buried in the ground.”
Frosted guitar chords matched to gentle yet insistent drumming, it's a beautifully frosted piece of sub zero guitar pop.
