In a way, The Rails can't help their past.
Singer Kami Thompson is the daughter of Richard and Linda Thompson, while husband James Walbourne has played guitar with the likes of The Pretenders, The Pogues and more.
The two come with a history, a heritage which they can't – and don't want to – shake off. Forming The Rails, the pair indulged their folk influences, penning material steeped in gloriously English influences.
A wonderfully natural document, 'Fair Warning' was produced by Edwyn Collins at his London studio and the results have that wonderfully 'in concert' ring to them.
Obviously, comparisons to Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span and others will be made, but The Rails seem to operate with a modern flourish.
Yet this isn't to deny their place alongside these legends – hell, Island even resurrected their iconic Pink Label especially for The Rails.
Out on May 5th, 'Fair Warning' is an album which recognises its influences but refuses to be cowed by them. Previous single 'Bonnie Portmore' matches a perfect folk melody to clashing electric guitars, while live favourite 'The Jealous Sailor' is brought to vivid life in the studio.
