Josh Ascalon has always gone backwards to carve a road forwards.
The Brooklyn producer was drawn to analogue synthesisers due to their expansive sonic capabilities, devouring 80s influences to create something glistening and futuristic.
Using the name The Great Void, new album 'Shift Age' will be released on September 4th, featuring contributions from Alan Palomo (Neon Indian), Noel Heroux (Hooray for Earth), George Lewis Jr. (Twin Shadow) Morgan Whirledge (Chrome Canyon) and Joe Stickney (Bear in Heaven, Autre Ne Veut).
Clash is able to tease the new record with something unusual from the producer. 'Medicine Ball' is a sumptuous, syrupy piece of electronic production, all stuttering technology and fresh ideas.
Josh introduces the track:
"The mid-80's vision of the future. The every-man American's access to decadence. Misunderstood in its time: "An over engineered failure". They didn't get it… I remember the first time I hit 110mph in my recently deceased Silver 1988 Pontiac Fiero. The windows down, my worn out Thriller cassette blasting, testing the decades old speakers: Nothing but the open road and black of night ahead of me. I didn't care that the suspension could give out at any moment, hurdling me towards certain death. I knew that my relationship with her was real, and I could trust her to get me where I was going."
